Georgia Overview
Georgia processes all boat registration through county tag offices — the same offices handling vehicle tags. Georgia replaced traditional sales tax with a Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) of 3%, which applies to all vessel title transfers in Georgia — including out-of-state transfers.
Unlike most states that only charge sales tax on new purchases, Georgia's 3% TAVT applies every time a vessel is titled in Georgia for the first time — including when you move from another state with a boat you already own.
Georgia Registration Fees (Annual)
| Vessel Length | Annual Fee |
|---|---|
| Under 16 feet | $20 |
| 16 ft – under 26 ft | $35 |
| 26 ft – under 40 ft | $50 |
| 40 ft and over | $65 |
Georgia Title Transfer
- Seller signs the back of the existing title or Form DNR 2090 assignment section.
- Buyer completes Form DNR 2090 — available at georgiawildlife.com or any county tag office.
- Submit to county tag office: title/DNR 2090, photo ID, bill of sale, payment ($18 title + 3% TAVT + registration fee).
- County tag office submits to DNR in Social Circle, GA. New title arrives by mail in 6–8 weeks.
Georgia is one of the few states where the county tag office handles the entire bonded title and registration process — you never need to visit a DNR office. Significant time savings.
